What comes to mind when you hear the word ultrasound? Most of us, I expect, find our minds reaching to the same place—specifically, to babies, and to pregnant mothers. And that’s for good reason, of course. The ultrasound is a very important tool in ensuring healthy pregnancies, and in allowing parents to see the first glimpses of their unborn kids. But did you know that ultrasounds are used in a number of others scenarios, as well—even some scenarios in which pregnancy isn’t involved?

It’s true. In fact, the ultrasound is just one of many pieces of equipment that might fall under the heading of Radiology—a branch of medicine that also includes the implementation of X-Ray, PET, MRI, and CT scanning technologies. Basically, all of these tools allow medical professionals the chance to peer inside the human body and get a glimpse at what’s going on. So something like an ultrasound can be useful for imaging a fetus or for diagnosing a disease. Really, its practical applications are endless.

So if you have an interest in medicine—that is, if you are curious about all the different branches of medicine, all the different scenarios in which something like an ultrasound might come in handy—you might think seriously about studying to become an ultrasound technician. There are plenty of great jobs to be found in this field, and the schooling itself is easy to come by.
