Cosmetologists working in psychiatric facilities earn an average of $15.65 while the online shopping and mail order industry pays an average of $17.83 an hour.
The lowest paying industry is state government at $15.32 per hour which means cosmetologists working in the highest paying motion picture and video industry are earning 92.62% more on the average. Generally speaking, cosmetologists working for state government are instructors in cosmetology schools or license examiners. Clearly it is possible to earn much more working in private industry.

When you compare the health store industry average wage to the fourth item on the list of top 5 industries with the highest employment levels which is employment services, the average annual wage difference narrows to 5%. The difference in annual wages between these two industries is $1,400. In other words, when you exclude department stores from consideration the remaining industries pay very similar wages in areas of high employment of cosmetologists.
